This week for Song Lyric Sunday our host Jim Adams for has given us the prompt of CANADIAN MUSIC.
Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not. If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.
Okay this week I had no problem focusing on what Musical Artist(s) I would use to satisfy the prompt of CANADIAN MUSIC. I am going to use Barenaked Ladies (BNL) singing a song about a Canadian city. BNL was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018.
BNL got their start when two Canadians from Scarborough, Ontario named Ed Robertson and Steve Page performed acoustically in the late 1980’s.
I have to admit I am a little late in discovering new musical talent. I discovered this group in the spring of 2007 when I stumbled across a YouTube video they did from one of their bathroom sessions performing the song “One Week’.
By the time I saw this video they had already become international recording stars. Like I said I was late to the party but I quickly caught up and listened to a lot of their music. I have a playlist of their songs I created on Spotify that I listened to all week long.
My song is Hello City which was written by Ed Robertson and Steve Page. The song was written in 1990 and was included on a demo tape they did. The song is about Halifax, Nova Scotia and some say it is a harsh satire on this Canadian City. It later appeared on several albums including their debut studio recorded album Gordon.
Below are the lyrics:
In 2007 BNL were the headliners on Celebrity Themed Cruise called Ships and Dips I.
The first Ships and Dips event took place on Carnival Legend. The video of Hello City is from that cruise as they leave port.
