For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on an MLB Pitcher who pitched three SHUTOUTS in One World Series.
In baseball there is this unofficial list called “unbreakable records“. One that should be on it occurred during the 1905 World Series. In that event Christy Mathewson pitched 3 shutouts in the span of 6 days. He helped his NY Giants defeat the Philadelphia A’s 4 games to 1.
World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Struggled to find stats on all World Series Shutouts but did locate info up until 2011 from this link.
Here are some notable facts about shutout games in the World Series:
- First World Series Shutout: The first shutout in World Series history occurred in Game 2 of the 1903 World Series, when the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Americans (now Red Sox) 3-0. The pitcher was Bill Dinneen of the Americans, who threw a complete-game shutout, marking the first in a long line of World Series pitching gems.
- Don Larsen’s Perfect Game: The most famous shutout in World Series history is undoubtedly Don Larsen’s perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series. Pitching for the New York Yankees, Larsen threw the only perfect game in World Series history, blanking the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0. It remains the only no-hitter and perfect game ever thrown in the Fall Classic.
- Most Shutouts by a Team: The New York Yankees hold the record for the most shutout victories in World Series history, with 26 shutouts across their many appearances. This dominance reflects their history of strong pitching staffs, particularly during the Yankees’ dynastic periods in the 1920s, 1940s, and 1990s.
- Madison Bumgarner’s 2014 Dominance: One of the most recent dominant shutout performances came from Madison Bumgarner in the 2014 World Series. Bumgarner threw a complete-game shutout in Game 5 against the Kansas City Royals, helping the San Francisco Giants take a 3-2 series lead. He later pitched five shutout innings in relief in Game 7, securing the Giants’ title.
- Back-to-Back Shutouts: Consecutive shutouts have occurred a few times in World Series history, such as in 1966, when the Baltimore Orioles shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers in Games 2, 3, and 4 to sweep the series. Pitchers Jim Palmer, Wally Bunker, and Dave McNally each tossed shutouts, marking one of the most dominant pitching performances in World Series history.
