In June 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “On This Date” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to engage in a meaningful or enjoyable activity inspired by a historical event, anniversary, or personal memory tied to that specific date. My post today is a tribute to the first perfect game every pitched in MLB history by Lee Richmond of the Worchester RUBY LEGS on June 12, 1880.

I thought I knew a little about the history of professional baseball but never knew there was a franchise unofficial called the Worchester Ruby Legs. The team existed from 1880 to 1882 under the official name the Worchester Worchesters.

Despite only existing for three seasons the organization is etched in baseball history book. Pitcher Lee Richmond threw the first perfect game on June 12, 1880. I am counting on friends Jeff Neelon and Matthew Sullivan Massachusetts natives to know that.
One other nugget about Lee Richmond is that his stats show him winning 71 games in his 3-year career for Worchester. Consider the team only won 90 in the same time frame you could say he was the ace of the Ruby Legs staff.
