In December 2025, many of us will take part in the 30-Day Rewind Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we’ll rewind, review, reflect or—in my case—re-blog one of my nearly 4,000 posts that highlight experiences shaping us into better versions of ourselves. If you don’t have a blog, your reflections can come from a journal or even a meaningful memory tied to something learned, a goal reached, or a personal effort to improve. These daily habits of looking back will serve as a powerful springboard for taking on a new and ambitious challenge in 2026. Today my rewind is on REPUTATATION.

In the 21st century, reputation is shaped as much by what you post, share, and endorse online as by how you act in person. It is built slowly through consistency and integrity yet can be damaged instantly in a world where everything is visible, searchable, and shareable.

On August 22, 2019 I crafted a blog post on reputation. It covered the concept of a leader, parent, or grandparent giving those around them a reputation to uphold. This idea is not mine but came from one of the books by John Maxwell titled “25 Ways to Win with People. To do that you have invest in people and make them feel valued. That emotion is something they don’t want to give away.

Rewind-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing a rewind, review, or reflection during the month of December

  1. Rewind, review, or reflect on a past effort to improve, a lesson you learned, or a goal you accomplished.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

December 18th-Reputation

Sometimes in the business world leaders will wait too long to recognize something. It is not until one of their team members has achieved some milestone before they do any inspiring, motivating, or challenging. I say that is a mistake. The best leaders search out what they believe someone can become. They have wisdom to focus on someone’s potential. Do that today for someone in your circle -give them a reputation to live up to.

Give Others a Reputation to Uphold is Rule #6 in Maxwell’s book. It means you should see the best in people, believe in their potential, and act as if they already are that best version. Doing that encourages them to live up to that high standard and fulfill their potential.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career.
