I found out yesterday that Steve Cottrell the former head basketball coach at Western Carolina University had passed away. I was one of his assistant basketball coaches from 1980-85. Those were five great years with some many moments that I love REMEMBERING.

Steve was the driving force along with Chancellor H.F. “Cotton” Robinson. Liston B. Ramsey, and Athletic Director Bob Waters in having a new facility Liston B Ramsey Center built on WCU campus. That facility replaced Reid Gym.

Back in 2015 I did a blog post on Steve and his friend Mark Edwards who won two NCAA Div. III National basketball championships at Washington University (MO) in 2008 and 2009. Mark also won nearly 700 games as a college coach but I remember him for his practical jokes some at the expense of me.

I am reposting a link to that post so I can smile REMEMBERING someone who was a big part of my life and development as coach. He taught me much about recruiting, coaching, and most important mirrored what a coach’s family could look like.

Rest in Peace Steve Cottrell-To Todd, Michael, Laura, and Kathy Cottrell prayers headed your way.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
