For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the WORLD SERIES. Today I am researching RAIN DELAYS.

Baseball fans do not like rain delays especially in the World Series. Yet despite their disenchantment for precipitation at the old ball game it happens.

In 1911 the World Series encountered the longest delay because of rain. That series featured the NY Giants and Philadelphia Athletics.

World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
  2. Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

October 4th-Rain Delays

At the conclusion of game 3 in the 1911 World Series the two teams encountered a 6-day rain delay.

Here is what happened.

The 1911 World Series, between the Philadelphia Athletics and the New York Giants, experienced a six-day delay due to heavy rain in Philadelphia. The delay occurred between Games 3 and 4, from October 17 to October 23.

The bad weather created unplayable field conditions, particularly at the Athletics’ home field, Shibe Park (which later became Connie Mack Stadium), which was prone to becoming muddy and difficult to play on after heavy rain. This extended rain delay was one of the longest in World Series history caused by weather. Despite the interruption, the series resumed, and the Athletics went on to win the championship in six games.
