For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the WORLD SERIES. Today I am researching the first ever PINCH-HIT HOMER.
If I gave you a couple of hints, would you be able to answer what MLB Player hit the first every Pinch-Hit Homer in World Series History?
Clue number one he played 7games in his first season and 83 (out of 154) in his second season.
Clue number two the sports writers called him Larry early in his career, but he soon became known by his nickname.
World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
- Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
October 5th-Pinch Hit Homer
In 1947, a New York Yankees player who had appeared in fewer than 100 MLB games stepped up to bat in the 7th inning of Game 3 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was the 258th World Series game in history, and no one had ever hit a pinch-hit home run. That changed on October 3, 1947, when Lawrence “Larry” Berra hit a home run to right field off pitcher Ralph Branca, making World Series history. At the time many newspapers referred to him as Larry. Everybody after 1947 universally called him Yogi.
Here is a list of all players who have hit a Pinch-Hit Homer not only in the World Series but in the playoffs. Eric Hinske for the Atlanta Braves was the last to due in 2010.
