In September 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Monuments Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight one of the nearly 50,000 National Monuments or Memorials across the United States. In addition, we’ll feature a wide range of other tributes—from statues honoring heroes and athletes to memorials recognizing outstanding citizens and many other categories.

At the heart of these 30-Day Challenges is curiosity. After nearly six years of monthly projects, the recurring question becomes: what idea should come next? A visit to Cleveland, Ohio, this past July led me to several statues and memorials, sparking the thought—does a complete list of the nation’s monuments and statues even exist? In fact, the National Monument Audit, a major research effort conducted by Monument Lab in 2021 with support from the Mellon Foundation, set out to examine the full landscape of monuments across the United States.

The audit identified roughly 48,000 sites, but it did not account for the many statues scattered across sports arenas, city parks, or college campuses. That means the possibilities for this challenge are nearly endless.

Monuments-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Monument in September

1. Record something about a particular US Monument. Make sure you include the location and something about its significance. Try, if possible, to include a photo.
2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

September 1-James A Garfield

My choice today is the James A Garfield Memorial actually the site for the inspiration for this challenge. It is located in Cleveland Ohio inside of Lake View Cemetery. It honors and is the final burial location for President James A Garfield. I visited this site on July 23, 2025, and was fortunate enough to get a tour. While touring I was curious on just how many monuments or statues existed in our country. Turns out a lot more than can be covered in a 30-Day Challenge.
