In September 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Monuments Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight one of the nearly 50,000 National Monuments or Memorials across the United States. In addition, we’ll feature a wide range of other tributes—from statues honoring heroes and athletes to memorials recognizing outstanding citizens and many other categories. Today the post is on the MEXICAN WAR Monument located in Harrisburg PA.

Sitting Southeast of the Pennsylvania State Capitol sits a tall, fluted column with a female figure adorned on top symbolizing victory in the Mexican American War. Was surprised to learn one of these would be located in the Keystone State. Research pointed out that fewer than 30 monuments of these exist in the United States.

September 13-Mexican War Monument

The origins of this war (1846-1848) were over a dispute of what the United States and Mexico had over boundaries. The Mexican claimed it was Nueces River, and the US wanted it to be the Rio Grande.

The Smithsonian Institution has a link that provides details about this monument located in Harrisburg PA. It was completed in 1869 but was relocated in 1894.
