September 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday Challenge each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 29 it is on LOGGIA.

One enjoyable aspect of 30-Day Challenges is learning something new. That is the case with today’s architectural term “Loggia“.  It acts as an outdoor living room or hallway. You can only enter it from inside the building.

Well, this month’s challenge let’s all of us that are not architects learn a little more about their language. To do that we have a simple challenge.

Every day we’ll learn one architectural term. Your challenge is to find an example—preferably one you’ve actually seen—and share a photograph, location and brief explanation.

Day 29-Loggia

My family knows that when I travel a part of my itinerary usually involves walking on college campuses. One of the coolest trips I have taken was visiting Iowa. It might be a state that people just consider a flyover destination, but I had a great time. One college I wanted to tour but did not see was Grinnell College.

Grinnell’s residence halls are organized into campus clusters, and each cluster has a loggia.
