October 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Celebrity Alma Mater Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a celebrity and share where they attended college. For Day 4 it is on LINDA RONSTADT.

There is a question being asked more and more today: “Should everyone go to college?” While higher education can open many doors, it is not the only path to a meaningful or successful career. As many life-advice gurus remind us, sometimes you have to be willing to dance to the beat of a different drum. That was certainly the case for Linda Ronstadt in 1964.

Linda grew up in Tucson Arizona and attended the University of Arizona for one semester. She left school and went to pursue music in Los Angles. She formed a band called the Stone Poneys and in 1967 they recorded a song written by Michael Nesmith called “Different Drum“. It was the same Michael Nesmith who would become part of The Monkees in the 1960’s. That song propelled Ronstadt into becoming a star.

Day 4-Linda Ronstadt and Univ of Arizona

Celebrity: Linda Ronstadt

Alma Mater: University of Arizona

Why They’re Famous: For being one of the most versatile and successful American singers of the 1970s and 1980s. Her career crossed several musical genres rather than staying within one style.

College Connection: Ronstadt did not complete a traditional college degree, but decades later the University of Arizona recognized her with an honorary doctorate in 2020.

Interesting Fact: She met guitarist Bob Kimmel while at the University of Arizona. Kimmel was a friend from her Tucson days, and their musical relationship became important to what happened next. She visited Kimmel in Los Angeles during a college break. Seeing the Los Angeles music scene—including musicians such as Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder—helped convince her that greater musical opportunities existed there. Kimmel was one of the members of the Stone Poneys.

Ronstadt wasn’t going to let the reins of society’s expectations pull her in a direction she didn’t want to go. Before “Different Drum” became the song that helped make her famous, she was already willing to march—or perhaps dance—to the beat of a different drum. She trusted her passion for music and chose to pursue a path that was uniquely her own. That was worthy of an honorary degree.
