In November 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Human Condition Coach4aday Challenge. “Human conditions” can refer to the wide range of physical, mental, emotional, and social experiences that define our lives. Each day we will spotlight or describe those experiences. I am going to use this challenge to dive into a book called “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows” written by John Koenig. It provides the readers words for feelings or human conditions we might be hard to describe.  My condition for today is JOUSKA.

To explain the condition known as Jouska, I’m turning to the 13th episode of Seinfeld’s eighth season, “The Comeback.” In it, George Costanza obsessively rehearses the perfect retort to an insult long after the moment has passed—an ideal example of Jouska in action.

Human Condition-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Human Condition during the month of November.

  1. Record or Describe a Human Condition. Try, if possible, to provide an example
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

If you need help in clarifying Human Conditions here are some examples

Another way that Jouska can appear is what the French callespirit de l’escalier

Geroge rehearsed his conversation over and over about having a second conversation including his comeback, but it didn’t play out the way he imagined it would. See below.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
