October 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Celebrity Alma Mater Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a celebrity and share where they attended college. For Day 10 it is on an actor named JOHN HOUSEMAN who gained notoriety as a law professor named Charles W. Kingsfield.
Sometimes a daily post is ripe with irony. My celebrity John Houseman actually did not attend college but was accepted and awarded a scholarship at Trinity College in Cambridge England. Finances prevented him from enrolling. He did do his schooling at Clifton College in Bristol England. Despite the name college Clifton is a K-12 institution.
What makes his choice ironic is his fame as an actor grew portraying a law professor at Harvard in the 1973 film The Paper Chase. He also did that role in the TV Show that debuted in 1978 with the same name. Further irony is later in life he founded the Juilliard School Drama Division.

Why They’re Famous: John Houseman was a renowned theater and film producer, director, and actor who won an Academy Award for his role in The Paper Chase. He became especially famous for portraying the intimidating Harvard law professor Charles W. Kingsfield in The Paper Chase, a role that made him a television icon.
College Connection: Three alums of Juilliard School Drama Division include Kevin Kline–Robin Williams and Jessica Chastain
Interesting Fact: Houseman became a major theater producer, Oscar-winning actor, and founder of Juilliard’s Drama Division never completed a college education.

There are a number of people that have stated that there would be no movie or TV Show called the Paper Chase if it wasn’t for the character Charles W. Kingsfield. These two clips are examples.
