For the month of August 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day County Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a fact about a county in the US. My focus is going to be on North Carolina, and today I am selecting HARNETT County.

If you travel up and down I-95 from Virginia to South Carolina you pass thru Harnett County. It was formed in 1855 from land given by Cumberland County. It was named for American Revolutionary solider Cornelius Harnett.

Below is a map of the county outlined in blue.

County 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in August learn something about a county in the United States
  2. Share that fact along with where it is located with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are some facts about the county.

Unique College Nickname & Mascot-Harnett County also claims home to Campbell University and the “Fighting Camels”. Campbell has one of the most unique mascots in the country.

Growth-The county has seen almost a 20% growth in population over the past decade according to 2020 US Census. Population today is over 133,000.

Outdoor Recreation-Raven Rock State Park is the county’s primary tourist attraction. The park offers visitors the chance to camp, picnic, hike, ride horseback on the trails, or even fish and canoe the Cape Fear River.  It just might be the state’s most underappreciated state park.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
