In August 2025, many of us are participating in the 30-Day Governors Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we highlight one of the 2,300+ U.S. Governors—past or present—sharing insights into their achievements, controversies, or unique aspects of their careers. For today my choice is going to be first GOVERNOR of North Carolina.

Richard Caswell (1729–1789) was North Carolina’s first elected governor, serving from 1777 to 1780, and again from 1785 to 1787, and he presided over the drafting of North Carolina’s first state constitution in 1776

August 1-Richard Caswell-1st- Governor of North Carolina
Many years ago, I wrote a post about the use of deception in a Revolutionary War Battle in North Carolina called Moore’s Creek Bridge. That battle between Loyalist and Patriots involved Richard Caswell who let 850 men. The Patriots stopped the Loyalists advance towards Wilmington where they wanted to control the port.
Caswell as Governor issued the first Governor’s Pardon that involved the 1777 Gourd Patch Conspiracy or Lewelling Conspiracy which included John Lewellen as ringleader.
What is amazing about this pardon issued by Governor Caswell was that the conspirators were trying to assassinate him. The plot was thwarted, and Caswell issued the first NC Governor’s pardon to John Lewellen who was found guilty of treason and was scheduled to be executed.
