September’s 30 Day #Coach4aday Challenge is to profile a biography on someone. Today it is on a man with that last name of GAMBLE who went into business with his brother in law.

William Proctor and James GAMBLE created the world’s largest consumer packaged goods company, Their business was called Proctor and Gamble (P&G) and was founded in 1837. Recent statistics include almost $84 billion in sales and more than $10 billion in net earnings.

Like many great businesses it started out with a simple concept. William Proctor was a candle maker and James Gamble was a soap maker. The two of them married sisters. Proctor married Olivia Norris and GAMBLE married Elizabeth Ann Norris. The two girls dad Alexander Norris encouraged them to merge and P&G was born.

Ivory Soap Changes P&G

James GAMBLE and his wife had ten children including James Norris GAMBLE who was born in 1836 and died in 1932. He was a trained chemist. In 1879, he developed an inexpensive white soap. William Proctor also had a son named Harley working for P&G. He named Gamble’s new soap Ivory.

Due to an accident during the production of Ivory, air was mixed into the soap mixture. The air actually made the soap lighter than water, causing it to float. Procter & Gamble marketed Ivory as the “Soap that Floats.” In the decades that followed Ivory’s development, Procter & Gamble continued to develop new products, but Ivory Soap remains in production today and is, perhaps, the company’s most well-known product.
