For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on EXTRA INNING games played in the event.
This year marks the 120th playing of the World Series and there have been a remarkable number of games that have gone to extra innings. Beginning in 2020 after 9 innings an automatic runner was put on 2nd base in regular season games. That is not the case in post season play.
World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
- Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms
October 16th-Extra Innings
In total there have been 65 World Series games go to extra inning since 1903.
Here are two interesting facts about World Series extra-inning games:
- Longest World Series Game by Innings – The longest game in World Series history, by innings, took place during Game 3 of the 2018 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox. It lasted 18 innings and took 7 hours and 20 minutes to complete, with the Dodgers winning 3-2 on a walk-off home run by Max Muncy.
- Most Extra-Inning Games in a Single World Series – The 1991 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves featured three extra-inning games, the most ever in a single World Series.
