In November 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Human Condition Coach4aday Challenge. “Human conditions” can refer to the wide range of physical, mental, emotional, and social experiences that define our lives. Each day we will spotlight or describe those experiences. I am going to use this challenge to dive into a book called “The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows” written by John Koenig. It provides the readers words for feelings or human conditions we might be hard to describe. My condition for today is EMODOX.

The term emodox combines “emotional” with “-dox,” meaning “not conforming to expected norms”. One easy to understand example would include someone laughing at a funeral while everyone is fighting back tears of sorrow.
Human Condition-30 Day Challenge Guidelines
As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Human Condition during the month of November.
- Record or Describe a Human Condition. Try, if possible, to provide an example
- Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
- Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
If you need help in clarifying Human Conditions here are some examples

November 3rd-Emodox
Going to try and utilize a Seinfeld clip to showcase the “Human Condition” of Emodox. Geroge Constanza in the Season 5 final episode titled “The Opposite” lands a job with the NY Yankees. When he announces his dream job to Jerry with the New York Baseball Team he’s overjoyed and so is Jerry. The people in George’s live are celebrating him — but almost immediately, anxiety and self-doubt take over for George. He becomes he opposite of the people around him.
The first part of the compilation video below is of George Constanza making his announcement he has joined the NY Yankees. He is happy full of pride along with everyone else in his life but in very short order his self-awareness of simultaneous pride and panic captures classic emodox — the recognition that his emotions or human condition are clashing in real time. His friends are excited, and but he is full of self-doubt.
