In May 2025, many of us have decided to participate in the 30-Day Golf Coach4aday Challenge. Each day the goal is to share something about a particular golf course, golf equipment, or to actually get on the course and play a few holes. Golf is the only sport where you can be furious, humbled, and ecstatic—all in the span of one hole, and still call it “relaxing.” It’s a game where you are cajoling and chasing a tiny ball into a gopher hole. For many it becomes a lifelong obsession and an excuse to buy outrageous pants and the latest driver.

Today my golf observation is on a golf course designer named DONALD ROSS.

This challenge will not be for everybody but there are plenty that enjoy the game despite not being anywhere close to playing at a high level. That includes me.

Golf 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to getting out on the golf course—but if that’s not in the cards, share a story about a favorite course or a piece of gear you love (or love to hate).

  1. Record something about your day on the course or talk about a golf course or piece of equipment.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 13-Donald Ross

On Saturday I traveled to Pinehurst NC for my wife and I to be treated to lunch by my oldest son and daughter-in-law. They both live and work there, and my son is the Executive Chef for Pinehurst Country Club and his wife works at the Sandhills Women’s Exchange Cabin. Working in the Village of Pinehurst you have to know your history of golf and that includes the man who designed Pinehurst #2.

We ate at the Holly Inn and parked adjacent to the bronze statue of Donald Ross who was the golf designer of not only Pinehurst #2 but of 415 other golf courses.

Back in October of 2023 I got to attend an event at the Dornoch Cottage which is located adjacent to the #3 green at Pinehurst #2. That is where Donald Ross lived from 1925 until his death in 1948. He built and designed the house. Here is a view walking off the #3 green on Pinehurst #2 into the backyard of the Cottage.

If you want to see a list of Donald Ross Golf Courses go to this link. Was excited to see his influence at my home course Pinecrest Country Club was included on the list for North Carolina.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
