For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on what game used the most COMBINED players.

My curiosity today was about what game in World Series history resulted in the most combined players. MLB rosters consist of 26 players with most games involving fewer than 14 a side. In Game 3 of the 2018 World Series the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox used a total of 46 players. That averages out to 23 a side.

World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines

  1. Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
  2. Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three key facts about Game 3 of the 2018 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers:

  1. Longest Game in World Series History: Game 3 set a record as the longest game in World Series history, both in terms of time and innings. The game lasted 18 innings and took 7 hours and 20 minutes to complete, ending in the early hours of the morning on October 27, 2018.
  2. Dodgers Walk-Off Victory: The Los Angeles Dodgers won the game 3-2 in dramatic fashion, thanks to a walk-off home run by Max Muncy in the bottom of the 18th inning. Muncy’s homer gave the Dodgers their first win of the series, cutting the Boston Red Sox’s lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.
  3. Pitching Marathon: Both teams used a combined 18 pitchers, and Dodgers starter Walker Buehler delivered a standout performance, pitching 7 shutout innings. For the Red Sox, Nathan Eovaldi earned praise for his heroic effort, pitching 6 innings in relief and allowing just two runs, despite ultimately taking the loss.
