For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with a professional golfer from Puerto Rico nicknamed CHI-CHI.

Juan Antonio Rodriquez was born in 1935 and as a young boy worked harvesting sugar cane. He got the nickname Chi-Chi as a child in honor of Puerto Rican Baseball Player Chi-Chi Flores.

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

July 18th-Chi-Chi

Many observers of professional golf in the 1970’s may have perceived Chi-Chi as some type of animated clown because of his sword dance. You can look at that routine in the video below.

When the Senior Tour now called the Champions Tour began Chi-Chi won 22 events in the first 15 years. Looking at the list of winners he is still in top 10. He was an entertainer but was a dynamic and completive professional golfer. Yes, he could entertain and make people smile and laugh. His parody on Womens’ Golf in the video below show how he can get a crowd to laugh.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
