Paying Attention

Last Wednesday I watched an episode of the TV show airing on the Smithsonian channel called “Aerial Africa”. The natural settings, the history, and the wildlife depicted in sixty minutes were all fascinating.

The episode I saw depicted the beauty of the South African coast. Ironically the next day I read about the behavior of African Gazelles.

Gazelles

Like many animals on the African continent they are migratory often in search of water and grazing spots. When they rest or feed they have to be on high ALERT.

Gazelles are very social animals and live in herds ranging from a few to over 500.

Like many of us Gazelles are vulnerable. While a Gazelle is constantly in danger of another predatory animal we as humans are subjected to attacks on our self-image.

The Gazelles have a strong sense of smell, hearing, and sight. They use that to their advantage by forming ALERT circles. Each member of the herd while grazing or resting is looking outward each with a different perspective to protect the entire herd from an attack.

We all need to be like the African Gazelle and make sure we surround ourselves with people who will form an ALERT circle for us. We were not meant to travel thru this world by ourselves. Having a group that can view the world from different perspectives can provide each us ALERT when warranted. Our inner circle can protect our self esteem and give us an ALERT that can keep us from thinking about the wrong things.
