July 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day America at 250 Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share something about America’s unique and quirky history. It can be about a place, an event, or person. Today as most of America swelters in July heat let’s look at AC.

For many years, Syracuse University played football and basketball in a stadium known as the Carrier Dome. During the 1990s, I had the opportunity to coach a basketball game there, and one thing I quickly learned was that, despite its name, the Dome did not have air conditioning. That finally changed in 2021 when a modern cooling system was installed.

Modern air conditioning or AC is credited to Willis Carrier, who founded the Carrier Corporation and revolutionized indoor climate control. When the Carrier Dome opened in 1979, its name resulted from what was then considered a landmark perpetual naming rights agreement between Syracuse University and the Carrier Corporation worth $2.75 million.

Over time, however, the value of naming rights in college athletics grew dramatically. Syracuse eventually recognized that the perpetual agreement no longer reflected the market, and in 2022 Carrier agreed to end the arrangement, allowing the stadium to be renamed the JMA Wireless Dome.

Day 5-AC

Willis Carrier invented AC in 1902. That invention has led to some marvelous improvements in the quality of life across the world. It was able to reshape where people lied, worked, and transformed communities.

Here are a few examples

Improved health and safety. Air conditioning has dramatically reduced heat-related illnesses and deaths by providing relief during extreme temperatures.

Increased productivity and economic growth. Comfortable indoor temperatures have made offices, factories, schools, hospitals, and data centers more efficient.

Added comfort to modern travel-placement of AC in cars, trains, busses, and planes has transformed travel.

It transformed the populations of many US Cities-Biggest example might be Phoenix-Before widespread air conditioning, Phoenix’s extreme summer temperatures—often exceeding 110°F (43°C)—made year-round living and working difficult for many people.

*1950: about 107,000 residents *

1960: about 439,000 residents

*Today: more than 1.6 million residents, making it the fifth-largest city in the United States.
