#WhiteChristmas December 24

Last week parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and all of New England got copious amounts of snow that are still on the ground. Today the forecast for Lumberton NC calls for rain.
When children wake up tomorrow in parts of the Northeast they will have a WHITE CHRISTMAS for others a wet Christmas.
A WHITE CHRISTMAS is rare in Southeast NC but I have lived long enough to experience one. The largest snowstorm in history for the Southeast U.S. coast occurred just before Christmas 1989. This storm broke all-time snowfall records in Wilmington, NC (15.3 inches), Cape Hatteras, NC (13.3 inches), Charleston, NC (8 inches), and Savannah, GA (3.6 inches). That storm caused me to wake up a my friend Rick Walrond early on Christmas Eve.
Rich was sleeping on our couch after a 1989 holiday party and I encouraged him begin his journey back home to Florida early. That turned out to be excellent advice as I-95 soon shut down.
Measurable snow fell as far south as Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Florida, and snow flurries were reported in Tampa and near Sarasota.
In Lumberton, NC we saw close to 10 inches of snow and we did have a “WHITE CHRISTMAS”. Below is a photo from Georgetown SC.
Here is a story in The Robesonian on that WHITE CHRISTMAS impact on Lumberton NC with a quote from my friend David Weinstein who was the mayor of Lumberton NC at the time. He later went on to become a NC State Senator.
Here is a link to what it looked like in Wilmington NC in 1989
Here is a link to news reports from Myrtle Beach SC. Keep in mind that Myrtle Beach has only had recorded snow 40 times over the past 80 years and half of those events were under 1″. So 1989 was truly special when it comes to having a WHITE CHRISTMAS.
Leave everyone with The Drifters singing that Irving Berlin 1942 holiday classic WHITE CHRISTMAS
Merry Christmas everyone!
