September 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday Challenge each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 27 it is on CUT and FILL.

Architects often have to work with other professionals to design and grade the overall shape of outdoor spaces a building will sit on. This work is often done by grading site contractor. The technique they use is often called “Cut and Fill“.

The grading an architect proposes determine whether water flows toward or away from a building, how a walkway approaches a house, and how a building sits within its landscape.
