September 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday Challenge each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 26 it is a CANTILEVER.

Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright as an architect know his home called “Fallingwater” features the use of Cantilevers.

Well, this month’s challenge let’s all of us that are not architects learn a little more about their language. To do that we have a simple challenge.

Every day we’ll learn one architectural term. Your challenge is to find an example—preferably one you’ve actually seen—and share a photograph, location and brief explanation.

Day 26-Cantilever

One of the signature architectural features that Wright utilized in designing homes was a cantilever.

Notable Wright homes with cantilevers

• Fallingwater — Mill Run, Pennsylvania (1935)
  Probably the most famous example. The reinforced-concrete terraces extend dramatically over the waterfall and appear to float above the stream.
• Frederick C. Robie House — Chicago, Illinois (1909)
  The long horizontal roof overhangs and balconies project beyond the supporting walls, reinforcing Wright’s signature horizontal design.
• Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House — Madison, Wisconsin (1936)
  The Usonian house incorporates strong horizontal roof projections and cantilevered elements as Wright experimented with economical construction.
• Kaufmann Desert House — Palm Springs, California (1946)
  Wright used projecting roof planes and cantilevered elements to create shade and extend living spaces toward the desert landscape.
• Taliesin — Spring Green, Wisconsin
  Wright repeatedly used projecting and overhanging architectural elements as the complex evolved over several decades.
