July 2026 several of us are going to take on theĀ 30-Day America at 250 Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share something about America’s unique and quirky history. It can be about a place, an event, or person.Ā Today it about two of the fifty US States that for a period of time were SOVEREIGN Nations.

A sovereign nation (or sovereign state) is a political entity that governs itself and is not subject to the authority of another country. In the history of the United States there are two US states that can claim that distinction. One of those two states existed for 83 years and the other for almost 10.

Day 7-US States that were once Sovereign

Here are the two US States that were recognized by others as sovereign.

Texas – The Republic of Texas

  • Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836 after the Texas Revolution.
  • It existed as an independent republic for nearly 10 years.
  • Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845 and became the 28th state.

Hawaii – The Kingdom of Hawaii

  • Hawaii was an internationally recognized sovereign kingdom with treaties and diplomatic relations with many nations.
  • The monarchy was overthrown in 1893.
  • It became the Republic of Hawaii before being annexed by the United States in 1898 and admitted as a state in 1959.

Other states that dabbled in Sovereignty

Two other US States sometimes get mentioned but their cases come with complications.

Vermont operated as the Vermont Republic for 14 years. It was independent of both Great Britain and the United States while New York and New Hampshire disputed ownership of the territory. Vermont adopted its own constitution, issued currency, and governed itself before becoming the 14th state in 1791.

California briefly declared itself the California Republic during the Bear Flag Revolt. However, this “republic” lasted only about 25 days before U.S. military forces took control during the Mexican American War, so it never functioned as a fully recognized sovereign nation.
