This February 2025, several of us are participating in the 30-Day Philosophy Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we choose a quote or concept from a philosopher, past or present, and share it with others. Participating in this activity is actually sharing wisdom with others. My philosopher choice today is C.S. LEWIS.
C.S. Lewis, a prolific author of over 40 books and a distinguished scholar, is the first 20th-century philosopher I have chosen to explore for this challenge. His writings often touched on morality, the ability to reason, and the plight of mankind. Labeled as a Christian Apologist he often appears on lists that profile great philosophers.
Lewis made a transition from atheist to Christian over time in no small part to his friendship with J.R.R Tolkien. It began in 1929 and by 1931 he was in total acceptance. He came to a personal realization that life having any meaning pointed to divine reality.
Philosophy 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines
- Identify your choice of philosopher, and, if necessary, offer up a brief bio on that individual.
- If you need help here is a link to some famous philosophers
- Provide the quote or concept that is attributed to this philosopher.
- If sharing with others use the #Coach4adayChallenge
February 2nd Philosopher–C.S. Lewis
Lewis gains a lot of notoriety for him penning three science fiction novels dubbed the Space Trilogy. It consisted of Out of The Silent Planet (1938), Perelandra (1943), and That Hideous Strength (1945). Each book has Elwin Ransom, a Philogist as a character in each one.
Quote or Concept
Going to a web page on Goodreads I spent thirty minutes reading quotes and concepts by C.S. Lewis. The choice to select one was difficult because of how insightful most of them were. In the end I came back to a simple one found below.
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”-C.S. Lewis
