October 29th-Mistakes

There have been hundreds of games played in the history of the World Series. Each game is going to include a multitude of plays and umpiring decisions. Not all of them have gone well on the biggest stage. In fact, one of the greatest players in the history, Babe Ruth is involved in one of its biggest World Series mistakes.

Game 7 of the 1926 World Series between the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals ended in one of the most surprising ways in World Series history: Babe Ruth was caught stealing for the final out.

Here’s what happened:

  1. High-Stakes Moment: In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Yankees were trailing 3-2 with two outs. Babe Ruth managed to get on base with a walk, giving New York hope to rally.
  2. Caught Trying to Steal: With Bob Meusel at the plate, Ruth attempted to steal second base, possibly in an effort to get into scoring position. However, Cardinals catcher Bob O’Farrell threw him out, and Rogers Hornsby, the Cardinals’ player-manager, tagged Ruth to end the game.
  3. Only World Series Ending with a Caught Stealing: This remains the only World Series to ever end with a player being caught stealing. It was a shocking finish, especially involving a slugger like Babe Ruth, and it sealed the Cardinals’ first World Series championship.
