For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Cu.

Cu is the symbol for copper.

30-Day Elements Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

September 27th-Cu

Here are three facts about the element copper.

Excellent Conductor of Electricity: Copper is one of the best conductors of electricity, second only to silver. Its high electrical conductivity makes it an essential material for electrical wiring, motors, and power generation equipment. Copper is also widely used in telecommunications and electronics due to this property.

Naturally Antimicrobial: Copper has natural antimicrobial properties, meaning it can kill bacteria and other microorganisms on contact. This makes it useful in medical environments and in the production of antimicrobial surfaces, such as door handles and railings, to reduce the spread of infections.

Used for Thousands of Years: Copper is one of the oldest metals used by humans. Its use dates back more than 10,000 years to ancient civilizations that crafted tools, weapons, and jewelry from it. It was also the first metal to be smelted from its ore and was instrumental in the development of early metallurgy. Copper alloys, such as bronze (a mix of copper and tin), led to the Bronze Age.
