North Myrtle Beach (NMB) SC is just 75 minutes away from my house in North Carolina. It was formed in 1968 by merging four beach communities into one. NMB became a reality by the consolidating Cherry Grove Beach, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, and Windy Hill Beach.

I have friends that call NMB home, love to vacation there, or can say “my place at the beach is in North Myrtle”. One person many of us know who was born there is VANNA White the letter turner on “Wheel of Fortune”. She is one of those people whose first name makes her easily recognized. For the record VANNA was born in Conway SC in 1957 but grew up in the Crescent Beach section of now NMB. She was just 11 when NMB became a reality.

NMB SC has four major claims to fame — VANNA White, a 1,780 pound shark caught off the Cherry Grove Pier, the PGA Tour’s first female lead golf announcer, Kelly Tilghman, and shag dancing.

This is not a very long post but I found a video on VANNA that was a piece that ran on CBS Sunday Morning back in March 2020.

I found a number of things interesting from this piece.

One she has done over 7,000 shows and wore 7,000 different dresses. Two, she grew up playing marbles as a child.

Other research on VANNA let me know that she likes to crochet. When she was five years old her grandmother taught her how to do it. She has passed the skill on to her own daughter teaching her how to crochet.
