August 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Plugged in Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we will feature an item from home or office that requires being plugged into a source of electricity to operate. We will reflect on how it makes life easier. For Day 13 it is the KNIFE.
Having electricity in homes meant that everyday household items became electrified. One example is the knife. As a tool it didn’t change the task it just made it more convenient especially for carving large roasts or turkeys.
Day 13-Electric Knife
The earliest electric carving knives appeared in the 1930s, although they were not immediately common household appliances. Early models were generally expensive and were used primarily in commercial kitchens or by people who wanted the latest labor-saving technology.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s the concept of having an electric knife in homes took off. Companies such as Sunbeam Products and Hamilton Beach marketed electric carving knives as convenient appliances for slicing Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas ham, roasts and bread. They became popular gifts and showed up on wedding registries.
