July 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day America at 250 Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share something about America’s unique and quirky history. It can be about a place, an event, or person. Today it about David FARRAGUT the first American to hold the rank of Admiral in the US Navy.

Before the Civil War, the United States had no admirals because the title was considered too closely tied to European royalty. That changed in 1862 when David Farragut became America’s first admiral, ushering in a new era for the U.S. Navy and its growing role on the world stage.

Day 19-Admiral Farragut

Travels to Knoxville TN have exposed me to the name Farragut. There is the town of Farragut TN, Farragut Park in Knoxville, and Farragut HS. Until this post I never knew his historical connection to America.

David Farragut is regarded as one of the greatest naval commanders in American history. Some of his most memorable achievements include:

Capture of New Orleans (1862) – Farragut led a daring fleet past Confederate forts to capture New Orleans, the South’s largest city and one of its most important ports. It was one of the Union’s greatest early victories in the Civil War.

Victory at Mobile Bay (1864) – He commanded the Union fleet in one of the Civil War’s decisive naval battles, closing one of the Confederacy’s last major Gulf Coast ports.

“Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” – During the Battle of Mobile Bay, Farragut famously ordered his fleet to continue through a field of naval mines (then called “torpedoes”), inspiring one of the most quoted commands in American military history.

Support of the Union blockade – His victories helped enforce the Union’s Anaconda Plan by restricting Confederate trade and supplies.
