This is a story about CALABASH.

In March of 1978 I was a 25 year old assistant basketball coach at Pembroke State now called UNC Pembroke. 

The university sponsored a men’s college golf tournament at Pinecrest Country Club and many area small colleges participated. We even had a few colleges from the Philadelphia area that participated.

The Philly colleges came to North Carolina to escape the wrath of winter that would still be going strong in early March. For one college golf coach from Philadelphia it was a chance to eat fried seafood at CALABASH NC.

CALABASH sits on the NC/SC state line just above North Myrtle Beach SC and bills itself as the “Seafood Capital of the World”

In 1978 that college golf coach asked me to accompany his team to dinner in CALABASH. I went along and enjoyed platter of fried shrimp and flounder.

There is a part of CALABASH history that I did not know. Jimmy Durante used to sign off his radio show with “Goodnight Mrs. CALABASH wherever you are”

Well there might be many that believe he was referring to CALABASH NC there are others that say it referred to his first wife Jeanne Olson (see below).

Great story in Our State Magazine written by Jason Frye that claims Mrs. CALABASH was Lucy Coleman.

Despite the controversy over who really was Mrs. Calabash there is no doubt that going to CALABASH for seafood will always be a good night.
