November 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will identify a ‘Saying or Expression” and explore what its origins are. For Day 3 we explore the idiom “Have an ALBATROSS around my Neck”

Many of the expressions we use every day have fascinating histories, cultural connections, and lessons that remain relevant today. The goal of this challenge is to explore those.
Today’s post is built around the realization that I already knew the origin of the expression. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is the source of the familiar saying, “An albatross around my neck.”
30-Day Idiom Coach4aday Challenge Guidelines
This challenge is not just limited to idioms but can include familiar sayings, expressions, clichés, proverbs, and colloquialisms.
How it works
- Share an expression, idiom, cliches, familiar sayings or even a colloquialism.
- Attempt to explain its origin and/or meaning
- Share it with others using the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge
Day 3-Have an Albatross around my Neck
If you take time to read the poem when you get to lines 139-142 you will encounter these words:
Ah! well a-day! what evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung.
