September 2026 several of us are going to take on theĀ 30-Day Architectural Coach4aday ChallengeĀ each day, we will define an architectural term and provide examples of where it is located. This challenge will let observation, travel, history, and photography all intersect. For Day 23 it is on the STOOP.

If you have visited US Cities like Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, or Washington DC you have probably encountered neighborhoods with Row Houses. Those homes almost always have a raised entrance with steps called a stoop.
Two row houses each with a staircase and stoop shown below.

30-Day Architectural Challenge Guidelines
If you have ever watched Seinfeld, you know that George Constanza always wanted to pretend to be an architect

Well, this monthās challenge letās all of us that are not architects learn a little more about their language. To do that we have a simple challenge.
Every day weāll learn one architectural term. Your challenge is to find an exampleāpreferably one youāve actually seenāand share a photograph, location and brief explanation.
Day 23-Stoop
If there is a place to visit to see lots of row houses it would be Philadelphia. Here are some facts gathered from a webpage on Phila.gov

Video-Row House from Film Rocky
If you have watched the film Rocky you know Rocky Balboa lived in a Row House with a stoop. Here is a video showing the places in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood where it was filmed.
