July 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day America at 250 Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we share something about America’s unique and quirky history. It can be about a place, an event, or person. Today’s story focuses on the State of NEW JERSEY and its retirement location for US Presidents.

When you reach a certain age data trackers seem to send you articles on places to retire. According to Care Scout and Wallet Hub choosing a New Jersey Retirement location is at the bottom. Reasons include taxes and high cost of living.

According to the 2025 SmartAsset analysis of U.S. Census data, 32,248 people age 60 and older left New Jersey for another state in 2023, while 17,097 retirees moved into New Jersey, for a net loss of 15,151 retirees.

Day 27-US President choosing NJ for Retirement

It has been a few decades but there was a time when US Presidents did choose to finish out their Golden Years in the Garden State

Here is a list.

Here are the most notable examples:

1. Grover Cleveland
   • Lived in: Princeton, New Jersey
   • Years: 1897–1908
   • After leaving office, Cleveland settled in Princeton at his home, Westland Mansion, where he wrote, lectured, and served as a trustee of Princeton University. He died there in 1908.
2. Woodrow Wilson
   • Lived in: Princeton, New Jersey
   • Although Wilson had lived in Princeton before becoming president (as a professor and president of Princeton University), he returned there briefly after leaving office in 1921 before moving permanently to Washington, D.C., because of his declining health.
3. Ulysses S. Grant
   • Lived in: Long Branch, New Jersey (seasonally)
   • After his presidency, Grant spent summers in Long Branch, a fashionable seaside resort known as the “Summer Capital.” He did not make it his permanent residence but stayed there frequently.
4. Richard Nixon
   • Lived in: Saddle River, New Jersey
   • Years: 1981–1989
   • After leaving California, Nixon moved to Saddle River, where he wrote several books and entertained world leaders before relocating to New York City in 1989.

Honorable mention

• Benjamin Harrison spent time at the New Jersey shore after his presidency but did not establish a permanent residence there.
