In September 2025, many of us will be taking part in the 30-Day Monuments Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we will spotlight one of the nearly 50,000 National Monuments or Memorials across the United States. In addition, we’ll feature a wide range of other tributes—from statues honoring heroes and athletes to memorials recognizing outstanding citizens and many other categories. Today the post is on TOMMY ROCK.

TOMMY ROCK is an iconic place on the campus of UNC Pembroke. College campuses often have places that graduates and visitors often look to take photos. Often times that location is a statue and that is the case at UNCP. A bronze replica of a red-tailed hawk sits on top of a gigantic granite boulder. UNCP mascot is the red-tailed hawk.

Monuments-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Monument in September

  1. Record something about a particular US Monument. Make sure you include the location and something about its significance. Try, if possible, to include a photo.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

September 12-Tommy Rock

In July 2021 I was asked to tell the story of the statue for UNCP Today Magazine. The location is in front of the Chavis University Center (UC) and it is called TOMMY ROCK. It was a gift from the Senior Class of 1999 that I got to facilitate its creation with a lot of help and support from many.

Here is screenshot of that story

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
