#2,937 January 15

Today marks the 2,937 consecutive day I have written a post.

Starting a habit streak can’t occur if you don’t try. It sounds so simple, but we all have had times when this was the hardest part. January 1, 2014, post was my start. Looking back, I remember not having the courage or know how to even post it until January 3rd. From that moment a habit streak of 2,937 has been created.

Initially when I saw that number, I thought it might be a Prime Number. Yet is is divisible by 3 so it is not special in that way.

It isn’t a neat, rounded number that connects me with anything that I can relate to or recall. What 2,937 is a data point for that habit that began on January 1, 2014.

Writing a daily blog post that was the habit I was after. My morning ritual for the past eight plus years has become part of who I am. Coach4aday has exceeded what many blogs encounter. Average life span of a blog is debated by different experts, but there is consensus it is not longer than 3 years.

Exceeding expectations is something that gives me joy. Having a daily writing habit has produced a number of blogging lessons.

Blogging Lessons from 2937 Posts

  1. Getting to 2937 comes about by doing it each day. Sounds simple but some days especially the early years it became a chore. Forcing myself not to get up from the computer until I wrote a draft became a new habit.
  2. Blogging as a newcomer I was infatuated with how many views a post would generate. Spending time checking my stats was an obsession. The first year of blogging the number of views hovered between 3 and 4, on a great day 15. Today checking stats on a daily basis is not something I do. When I stopped obsessing about the number of views and focused on the habit of producing content, something magically happened.
  3. In 2014 my first year of blogging all 365 posts combined were viewed 1,956 times. That comes out to 5 views per post.
  4. Viewership stats for 2021 hovered around 45,000 which is about 125 views a day. If you keep blogging viewers show up.
  5. People seem to enjoy leadership stories more than personal reflection.
  6. We do the best what we do the most-my self-assessment is my writing has improved. I have made gains but am far from perfection.
  7. Learning and creating new habits thru 30 Day Challenges has been a byproduct of daily writing.
  8. Pivoting on writing topics worked for me. My overarching theme is about leadership and learning but I did not make it a daily requirement.
  9. Push your message out on other platforms. Today my posts go to my twitter feed and Facebook wall.
  10. Read other blogger posts-like other bloggers posts-comment on other blogger posts.

Tomorrow it is on from 2,937 to 2,938 a “Habit Streak” I hope to keep going.
